- Learning Isn’t Complete Until It Shows Up in Action
I’ve come to learn that our learning system loop starts with our perceptions from the world or environment around us and travels journey to end up closing with us performing an action back to the world or environment around
In a nutshell it’ll move through the following stations
World → Perception → Attention → Working Memory ↔ Long-Term Memory → Action → World
Now everything that comes before the action I’ve studied all the way from You have already studied much of the left/middle side: Sensory store being where what we detect resides , Attention being the bridge that selects with the information goes to our Working memory, to Working memory where we process these information consciously, to how we connect new information through elaboration to how we bring knowledge back through the process of retreieval and lastly understanding what we know vs what we can do (Declarative/Precedural)
What Clark is sealing for me now is how Eventually, all of the above has to end up coming out as action. That is the motor part.
And “motor” is much broader than physical movement. As it could be ;speaking typing, clicking, facial expressions, hand movements, performing a task or even making a decision that leads to an action.
So, for an instructional designer, performance is the observable end of the learning loop.

- Check out "Learning Science" by Clark Quinn — If you design learning, teach, or train people, you need to understand what is actually happening when someone learns. Learning happens at the neural level, but we design for it at the cognitive level. There’s a lot more in Clark Quinn’s book that I can’t share because of **intellectual property**. Get the book and experience the learning yourself. 📚You Would Love It!
